Customer Reviews:

Almost perfect4
My now-ancient Philips CD clock radio let me down, so I decided it was time to upgrade with more-modern technology. I still wanted to wake to CD sound rather than a radio station or normal alarm sounds, and after a short search, I found this Sony. It has some features that I really appreciate, which make this clock intuitive and useful. Specifically …

1) There is a perpetual clock built in, so that after a power failure the clock has the correct time. My old clock had a 9V battery to keep the clock circuit energized, but it always ran fast (really fast) and needed to be reset after the power returned. This one works really well.

2) The CD track selection works every time. My older clock seemed to have a “mind of its own” when I set the wake-up track. I resigned to just letting it go on track 1, which would reliably repeat; just pick a CD with an acceptable first track. This Sony clock wakes me on whatever track I set it to every time.

3) The second alarm is a nice feature. I can easily set it to one of two different wake-up times with the press of a button (really it is two buttons). The out-going Philips clock had a more-arcane method of setting a second wake-up time. I don’t think that I ever mastered it.

4) The sound quality is more than adequate. What I would expect out of the tiny 2-in speakers seems to be surpassed. Perhaps it is my imagination.

5) The generously sized snooze bar is easy to find in the morning. Although my Philips clock had a proximity sensor to detect my approaching hand, it seemed to have a very narrow field of regard, and I often had to wave my hand numerous times to get the alarm to stop. This Sony clock has the snooze bar located just above the table surface, so a groggy sliding hand can find it easily.

6) The addition of two alarm times on the main display help in seeing that the alarm is set and to what time. No button pushes are required to read the alarm time.

7) Oh yeah … it is a pretty cool-looking clock with an easily loaded CD.

Now for the not-so-good part…

This clock uses blue LCD backlighting, which is very bright in a dark room, even at its lowest setting. It is so bright that I had to cover over the display to prevent it from lighting up my room. I found that cutting out a 2.5 x 5 piece of card stock makes a suitable display cover that prevents the night-time light pollution, but you also lose the time on the display. It works out OK in my bedroom, because we have a second perpetual-time clock with a less-obtrusive red LED display.

Overall, I would still give this clock a high mark, and I am happy using it. I would expect that someone with more light seeping in at night might not have the same objection to the display brightness that I have. Selectable display colors, where red is a choice, might be a solution for me.

Just what I wanted!5
When the CD player failed on my old Timex (Piece of junk) unit I began the search for a new one with the features I wanted. This item fit the bill 99%.

It features great sound with the little conveniences I wanted.
I wanted a unit that played my homemade CDs- check.
I wanted duel alarms- check.
The light from it can’t be too bright- check.
A sleep feature is necessary- check.
A nap alarm would be nice- check.
Nature sounds as well- Nope. That is the one thing I didn’t get.

I have had the unit for over a week now, the alarm requires a bit of getting use to with the insistent beep-beep that gets louder and louder, but it will do. I go to sleep to music on the 90 minute sleep setting and not having to change the alarms for a nap is nice. I love the way you touch the snooze bar and the light dims and then with a second touch, goes off. If it lasts well I will be overjoyed with the choice.

Great Features — Cut Corners1
I hated to return this radio. It has some fantastic features. This is the clock radio I want. Except it’s cheaply made is some areas that turn the best clock radio on the planet into an epic fail.

The good. The features are great. Dual alarms. Nice sound. An excellent strategy for the backlight (the plague of modern clock radios) which lets you change it very easily from the snooze bar. Dual alarms. Even a battery backup!

The bad? An incredibly cheap radio tuner that couldn’t even bring in a local station with a transmitter 8 miles from our home. My requirements on a clock radio are pretty minimal, but hearing my Morning Edition is one of them. The CD player also seems cheaply made and when we went to sleep to it, we woke up in the middle of the night to the click click click sound of the CD transport. While the snooze bar was a wonderful and functional large bar that doubles to easily turn down the backlight, to actually turn off the alarm requires accessing a fairly small button on the side. Our nightstand is a bit above the level of the bed and the display is only visible from straight on or above.

As I said, on paper this is everything I could have asked for, but it had a couple of problems that left us not only dissatisfied, but returning it.

“Baby Sister”…and…”The Big Fella”…..5
This review refers to the Paramount(Widescreen Collection) DVD edition of “True Grit”…

A great big nod to Paramount for giving us The Duke’s Academy Award winning role as “Rooster Cogburn” on this superb DVD. This fabulous Wayne western from 1969 looks immaculate. Presented in widescreen, the picture is clear and sharp, and all the beautiful scenery in Technicolor is glorious. The sound in DD2.0(MONO) was surpisngly good as well.(Could be great in surround though). If you love this film, John Wayne or a great western, grab this one up!

The story for those that may have missed it, is very adventurous as well as highly amsuing. Rooster Cogburn is a take no prisoners U.S. Marshall. That’s not all he is though…he’s an old, overweight, brash drunkard. But he’s got ‘grit’. And that is exactly what young Maddie Ross is looking for when she hires him to go after the man who killed her father.Maddie(Kim Darby), now affectionatly called “Baby Sister” by our guy, is also a take no prisoner’s kind of gal..but not exactly in the same way as Cogburn is. Maddie is a proper young lady, who’s family “has property”, and brandishes her lawyer as her weapon of choice. And what’s more..she’s going along on the hunt for this bad guy who has joined up with a group of some really bad hombres. Also in on the ride is an inexperienced but gung-ho Texas Ranger(Glen Campbell)who Maddie is immediatly at odds with. The sparks fly as this trio hits the trail.

John Wayne IS Rooster Cogburn.Rooster Cogburn IS John Wayne. The Duke delivers the lines as only he could. There’s a great scene, where a drunken Cogburn falls off his horse, flat on his face, but yet doesn’t spill a drop of the open whiskey bottle he holds.Later on you’ll thrill to seeing him riding in, guns blazing in each hand as he goes after the bad guys. It’s pure Wayne! The bad guys by the way are legends in themselves, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper among them. Strother Martin also adds to the fun going toe to toe with Maddie on a horse deal. Elmer Bernstein provides the glorious music, and Campbell sings the title song. Directed by the great Henry Hathaway, it’s a film filled with immense talent.

It’s fun and adventurous and is rated G, but there are some scenes that may be a bit too violent for younger viewers.
The DVD also includes English Subtitles for hearing impaired viewers. There are no special features, but for me, seeing this film restored so beautifully, having The Duke looking so great on my screen was bonus enough.

Saddle up with “The Big Fella”…and enjoy…Laurie

True Grit DVD

True Grit is probably my favorite John Wayne western, maybe The Shootist is a close second. It stars John Wayne as an old, rough and coarse U. S. Marshall who reluctantly helps a teenager (Kim Darby) who both won academy Awards for their roles in the movie. The Marshall helps track down the killer of Darcy’s Father into Indian Territory (modern day Oklahoma). The movie is based on the novel True Grit.

Glen Campbell sings and plays a Texas Ranger who tags along.

Highly recommended for fans of John Wayne, Classic Western movies, and Cowboy movies the way they used to be made.

A CHARMING OLD CHESTNUT…5
.
In ways this is a cheesy old chestnut; but it has its own charms.

It’s beautifully cinemagraphed: the colours are rich and vibrant. The natural scenery is wonderful. Plus, the beginning of the film is a splendid evocation of American Victorianism–with the funeral parlor, court house, boarding house, etc.

The representation of post-bellum middle-southern America is excellently drawn. (The locale is supposed to be Arkansas. There is mention of Yankees and Texicans, etc.)

Glenn Campbell was not an actor at all, but he was a good fellow and a nice folk singer of the 1960s. And I guess he was a genuine Texan. Great supporting cast with Robert Duval and Jeff Corey. The two scenes with Strother Martin are worth the price of admission alone. As far as I’m concerned, this is John Wayne’s finest role.

The sound track score by Elmer Bernstein is very fine; and as mentioned, the scenic cinematography is excellent. The screenplay dialogue is wonderful, featuring real Americana turns of phrase. The widescreen DVD is very fine.

Finally, there is an ineffably life-affirming ambience to this film which I find touching and uplifting. At the end, when Rooster jumps the rail on his new horse, it brings a tear of joy to my eye…

Amazon.com essential video
A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line “Ride, boldly ride” being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into “Ride, baldy, ride.” Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they’d failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway’s finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey’s Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall’s “Lucky” Ned Pepper). It’s a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway’s 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film’s most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. –Richard T. Jameson

Ranger’s Apprentice: Erak’s Ransom Description:

What does it mean to earn the Silver Oakleaf? So few men have done so. For Will, a mere boy, that symbol of honor has long felt out of reach. Now, in the wake of Araluen’s uneasy truce with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a dangerous desert tribe. The Rangers are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a strange land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the unrelenting heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another. Like a desert mirage, nothing is as it seems. Yet one thing is constant: the bravery of the Rangers.

In this red-hot adventure, winner of the Australian Book of the Year Award for Older Children, John Flanagan raises the stakes on the series that has already sold millions of copies worldwide.

Customer Reviews:

My 10 year old’s review5
In Ranger’s Apprentice 7, Erak is making a last raid when he is caught and is held for ransom. Will, Halt, Horace, Cassandra, and Gilan must find him and rescue him. There is a fair amount action in this book. This book is only available in the Australian version. Chronologically, this book comes before the 5th and 6th but after the 1-4. He does a good job of putting pressure on characters. I thought it was a good book and that it was worth buying online from an Australian bookseller.

Another great, exciting read – one of the series’ best5
The book is one of the most exciting yet in John Flanagan’s series. After a relatively calm start that includes a wedding for one of the central characters, the story proceeds from a seafaring journey to desert adventures that combine political intrigue, surprising twists in alliances, sword fighting and the testing of archers’ skills, as well as survival under brutal circumstances. Readers will find themselves effortlessly picking up information about sailing techniques, ancient wooden ships, nomadic lifestyles, varying cultural views, and desert topography, climate and endurance skills as the tale, with its themes of loyalty and trust, unfolds. The heroes face their serious challenges, including the threat of impending death, with bravery and maintain a dialogue flecked with humor and word play true to their personalities and relationships. All in all, another can’t-put-down book for myself and my 10-year-old son.

Wonderful5
We first discovered this series at the library. My twelve year old son and I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the books. In fact, since this volume is not yet available in the US, there’s a line up of boys waiting to read it on my son’s baseball team. The series has both strong and admirable male and female characters. There is an old world setting with a modern feel. This story fits in the RA time line between books four and five, before Will is a fully trained Ranger. It was my son’s favorite so far!

From Booklist
Book 7, the latest adventure in the Ranger’s Apprentice series, chronologically takes place after Book 4. Soon to conclude his apprenticeship and become a ranger, young Will joins Halt, Gilan, Horace, Evanlyn, and Svengal on a perilous mission to free their friend Erak, who has been captured by the Arridians and held for ransom. The vaguely Middle Eastern desert setting provides new challenges, new allies, and new foes for the Araluens and their Skandian friends. Bringing together many favorite characters for a grand adventure, this book delivers both excitement and quiet good times. Grades 5-8. –Carolyn Phelan

Customer Reviews:

An amazing product!5
I’ve been waxing with Sally Hansen products for years and they are messy and sometimes inconvenient (though the somewhat recent addition of microwavable waxes was a great step forward). My sister recently told me about this Nad’s wand, so I bought it to try.

Well! It eliminates the heating step – you simply run it under warm water, or rub it between your hands, to get the wax flowing, then twist the back of the “pen” to make wax come out of the tip. Draw it on where you want the wax to be, put a cloth strip (included) over the wax, and Bob’s your uncle. You can even rinse off the cloth strips afterwards and reuse them, if you wish!

Sally Hansen products are in the garbage. It’s Nad’s for me all the time, now.

the best nads yet!5
i used the dip-type wand before finding this one, and was relatively pleased with it, until it started getting crystallized due to exposure to air. this new kind seals itself off when you close it so there is no exposure, which also helps keep the stuff sticky. i like the strips better in this one too because they don’t fray and i can keep using them until the wand runs out. get this one and save yourself a ton of money.

Best results5
This product is superb! It is quick, easy, and the results are great. The cold wax glides on easily, and hair is easily removed with the strips. The whole process could not have been quicker or easier. I highly recommend!!

Customer Reviews:

So cute and a good size5
Some of the hampers I looked at were actually rather small when you looked at the dimensions, but this is about the size of a standard pop-up hamper. It does have 4 plastic rods instead of being all wire (you’d have to take these out to fold it back up into that little circle) but since I have no intention of folding it up except for moving that’s not an issue. I like that it’s more of a rectangle shape and I can slide it sideways if I need it to take up a little less wall space.

Excellent Baby Laundry Receptacle5
Like most new parents, we needed a place to put all that filthy baby laundry until we had a chance to do laundry again. And this stuff is seriously FILTHY. I don’t know what they do/do not let you say in Amazon product reviews, but here I’m talking about FECES AND URINE.

So you can imagine how nice it is to have this hamper with a big silly monkey on it! It’s so pleasant, you don’t even think about what nastiness lies behind its smiling monkey face.

It is also very well made, as evidenced by how well it contains this filthy baby laundry. Not once have I noticed any “material” seeping out onto the carpet around where we have set up the hamper.

I can’t recommend this hamper highly enough.

PLEASE NOTE: I am reviewing the “Monkey” design. I CANNOT SPEAK for the other designs.

Large Hamper4
This hamper is definitely bigger than most baby hampers. It fits a lot of baby laundry. The top is completely open and the sides are made of mesh. I really liked this hamper, but unfortunately I had to throw it out because my dog could smell the dirty laundry through the mesh and tried to eat through the mesh every day. It is super cute and I would definitely recommend this hamper. Be careful when you first open it up out of the package, it opens up very fast! make sure you stand back.

From the Manufacturer
Monkey Novelty Hamper is great for bedroom, playroom and more. It is convenient to carry handles. It is made up of durable fabric holds laundry, toys, and more. It measures a giant size of 24″X18″X11″.

Customer Reviews:

The king of automotive GPS5
I really love the 720. I have tried the Garmin Nuvi and just didn’t like the software nearly as much as the TomTom. Entering addresses is really fast and you only see towns in the state you are looking in. This means no more having to scroll through 30 different Springfields to get to the one you are searching for. You can hide the keyboard to see a long list of close matches so instead of having to type out the full city or street name you can just hit the first few letters and then pick from a list.

Mapshare seems like it will be a huge advance in the world of automotive GPS devices. Is a street marked as open when it should be blocked? Just correct the error with a few quick taps on the screen and it’s fixed. What’s really the big advance though is the ability to share my corrections with all other TomTom owners. I connect the 720 to the TomTom HOME software and it downloads corrections that other users have submitted.

What you see on the screen can be fully customized so that if you want the status bar on the side then you can put it there or you can leave it on the bottom. You can also decide what information is shown in the status bar. You can show or hide the time of day, remaining time, remaining distance, current heading, and your current rate of speed. If you subtract items from the status bar the other items automatically get bigger to take up the remaining space. You can also select if you want to show the current street you are on and the name of the next street you will be turning on to.

Text to speech quality is very good and will say the directions so for example it might say “in 250 feet keep right, then take the exit right, 204B towards Westview.” Or “in 200 meters, turn right South West Madison Avenue.” You can choose from multiple voices although I think the Dave voice sounds the best of the bunch. If you don’t want to hear the “keep to lane” instructions you can disable this feature although I personally like to have it on. You can also record your own spoken instructions so for example you could have your kid’s voice tell you to turn left in 200 feet. I haven’t tried this though.

The screen is very bright and easy to see even when I have my sunglasses on. The 720 can be set to automatically turn the brightness down as it gets dark thanks to a built in light sensor on the front of the unit.

The mount is pretty clever and super easy to use. Just push it up to the windshield and it sticks right on. The 720 then just slides right on and is held solidly in place. You can turn the 720 in any direction to get it exactly where it’s easiest for you to see.

With all the great features of the 720, I think what will really set it apart even more from the other GPS units out there is the Mapshare feature. Being able to fix your own map and download updates automatically to keep the map up to date is one of those things that is so fantastically great that you wonder why on earth it took so long to make to a shipping product. Whether or not it can live up to the expectations remains to be seen. Even if you took Mapshare away it’s still the best car GPS I’ve ever used. With it, there’s just no contest.

My biggest complaint is that there’s no case in the box. You need to buy one separately although I’ve been using the plastic holder it shipped in so far which is OK.

Very Different from a Garmin4
After using a Garmin Nuvi 350 for a while, it finally was ready for retirement and I started looking for something new. The 720 seemed like a good way to go. Unfortunately for me, I have become fluent in Garminese so switching to Tomtom has been somewhat of a challenge.

The Garmin interface was simple and clean. This Tomtom does alot more so there are more menu choices and more clutter. For instance, if you want to cancel a route, Garmin had a STOP button on the screen. Tomtom requires you to go down 3 menu levels to cancel. Not that hard to do once you know where to go.

Garmin would tell me “In 500 feet, turn left on Main Street”. Tomtom tells me the street I need to turn on sometime before but the actual command will be “After 200 yards, turn left”. Different especially if you are used to something else. One good thing though is where Garmin said “turn left, then left” Tomtom says “turn left then make third left”, better!

Routing seems better on the Tomtom so far. Garmin had a habit of routing me on small, winding, unlighted, hilly roads instead of main roads and highways. If you don’t know better, you follow these backroads and it can be dangerous. So far, Tomtom has consistantly taken me to the highways which is one of the main reasons I left Garmin.

Now the bad. Favorites on Garmin are stored by name. When you select a favorite, you are shown the complete address as well. Tomtom by default stores a favorite by address. That doesn’t help with a restaurant or store that you will never remembor or recognize the address. You can rename a favorite like “My Restaurant”. Thats ok but then the actual address is hidden. There seems to be no way of displaying the real address of the favorite. As a work around I have just appended a name to the address so the name of a favorite will be something like “100 Main Street, Anytown, NY – My Restaurant”. Its long, wordy, makes for an ugly favorites page but it works.

The Garmin graphics were generally higher resolution looking but that comes at a price. Garmin updates the screen approx once a second giving a jerky motion to the animation. Tomtom has more jagged graphics but it is smoother. Haven’t decided which is better yet.

All in all I am pleased so far with the 720. Only time will tell but so far, it has done better with routing than the Garmin and thats what is most important in the end.

Two thumbs, way up5
When I received the 720 from Amazon, I was impressed with the packaging. It was boxed and padded quite well and arrived in excellent condition. Before doing anything I decide to read the Quick Start Guide, a dark gray pamphlet included in the 720 box. It advised me to charge the unit at least 2 hours before proceeding. So without even turning the unit on I plugged the base unit into a USB port on my computer. This base unit is used, via the USB, to connect to the computer as well as recharging. My regret here was that I would not be able to recharge the unit in my house unless the computer is on.

While the unit was charging I went ahead and installed the software using the CD which was included in the package. The installation went smoothly on my computer which runs on Vista Home Premium. After the recommended charging interval of 2 hours I activated the 720 and it immediately connected to the software, Tomtom Home, which I had just installed. Almost instantly I was informed that there was a software update for Tomtom Home. I told it to continue and my computer downloaded an updated Tomtom Home version 2 point something and proceeded to uninstall the version I had just installed using the CD and to install the new version. I was mildly annoyed, but I was grateful that the update downloaded and installed without incident.

My 720 then asked permission to download some updates into itself, which I allowed it do. Everything went smoothly and I continued by setting some preferences in the 720 by using Tomtom Home. I then spent about an hour with the unit, unplugged from the computer, to get familiar with the menu structure. The last GPS that I had was a Garmin IQue 3600 and I found the 720 structured very differently. Nearly every choice in the menu structure of the 720 is graphically based using pages of icons with which to make your selections or set your preference. I found it very intuitive and comfortable.

Later, when I took the 720 on its “maiden voyage”, I found that using the unit was very simple. Choosing a destination and creating a route was easy and the unit calculated the route very quickly. Generally the unit selects routes that are nearly identical to what I, as a local, would also pick. Only once has it routed in what I would consider a round-about sort of way but after I considered what it had done I realized that its chosen route would be nearly identical, in travel time, to what I would normally use, so I can’t really criticize it.

Since then the 720 has performed consistently and dependably. The map data had some minor errors, most of which, incidentally, I have already corrected and shared with the Tomtom database using Map Share while connected to the internet. It even uses the 2 road name corrections I have made for a couple of local streets, using them in route calculations and even pronouncing them correctly when making navigation announcements. I have had no technical glitches at all.

I have interfaced the 720 with my cell phone using Bluetooth. Making and receiving phone calls using the 720 works flawlessly. It downloaded my entire list of telephone numbers from my Starcom and can easily recall them and place calls. The 720 internal speaker sound quality is good considering its size.

The 720 locates and locks on to the GPS satellites and provides a position with a speed I would have thought impossible a couple of years ago. It is exquisitely sensitive to the satellite signals and I am routinely able to lock on to 6 or 7 satellites sitting in front of my computer, near the center of my house. Amazing! In my vehicle I have installed an external antenna and the 720’s performance using this is phenomenal.

I have recently downloaded several songs and pictures into the unit and it plays and displays these without any hitch. I use the FM transmitter, built into the unit, to play music over my vehicle’s radio. I have discovered that I need to turn up the 720’s volume slide to 100% in order not to turn up the radio’s volume too much; this helps avoid an annoying hiss that you hear when an FM radio is turned up too loudly. Incidentally, the 720 politely mutes the music when a navigation announcement is made and then resumes. The quality of this sound is reasonable for casual listening in my pickup. The color of the screen when viewing pictures is good (not great) and the display resolution is acceptable for this purpose. Using the slideshow option to view the pictures gets rid of the aggravating gray bars which I otherwise have with pictures. I have added a 2 GB SD card to provide storage for these files. I am adamantly against using my internal storage for this. For me the 2 gigabytes are more than adequate. However, I can easily understand that 2 GB would seriously limit some people. The unit will interface with an Ipod although I have not done this since I don’t own an Ipod.

My overall experience with the 720 has been great and I think the Tomtom 720 is surely one of the acme products in the GPS market. I congratulate Tomtom for coming up with a product like this and give the 720 an enthusiastic round of applause. Two thumbs up! Forgive my rather lengthy post.
